Additional duties on imported lighting products have been part of the North American sourcing calculation for years, and the schedule is amended often enough that no article can stay current on specific rates. The durable skill is not memorising rates; it is building flexibility into a programme.
Know your exposure before you quote
For each model, work out the classification, the origin, and the total duty including any additional measures. Then express the result as a percentage of landed cost. Only when the number is visible can you decide between absorbing it, repositioning the price, or changing the source.
Levers that actually move the number
Four levers, in rough order of effect:
- Country of origin, which can be changed for some components and assemblies but rarely for the finished lamp
- Product classification, which is legitimate engineering if the material genuinely changes
- First sale or transaction value, which importers should discuss with their broker
- Price ladder, because shifting volume towards a lower-cost model protects margin more reliably than absorbing duty
Origin rules are not a loophole
Assembling a lamp in a third country from Chinese components does not usually change origin, and claiming otherwise is a compliance risk that costs more than the duty it saves. Origin rests on where the substantial transformation happens, which is a factual question about the process.
What buyers ask us for now
Three things come up in almost every conversation: a cost breakdown that shows the duty as a separate line, a commitment on lead time so the order can be timed, and a domestic stocking option so part of the assortment can be replenished without a new import cycle.
Price transparency beats optimism
Programmes survive tariff changes when the conversation happens early, with the duty line visible on the quote. They fail when a supplier absorbs the cost on the first order to win the business and asks for it back on the second.
Duty rates and the additional-duty lists change frequently. Confirm the current position with your customs broker before quoting a landed cost.
