LCL or FCL? Choosing the Right Container Decision for Lamps

LCL or FCL? Choosing the Right Container Decision for Lamps

The choice between less-than-container-load and a full container is usually presented as a rate comparison. It is really a question about fragility, timing and how much handling a lamp carton can survive.

What changes in an LCL shipment

Goods are consolidated with other cargo, stripped and re-stuffed at a facility, and handled several more times than in a direct container. Lamps are tall, top-heavy cartons with a vulnerable shade, and every additional handling event is an opportunity for damage.

The volume threshold is a moving target

The break-even point between LCL and FCL moves with rates and with the destination. As a rule of thumb, once a shipment passes roughly fifteen cubic metres, the rate advantage of LCL has usually disappeared, and what remains is the extra handling risk.

Cargo integrity matters more than rate

A sealed container means the goods are not moved between the factory and the destination warehouse. For a product with a shade and a tall stem, that is worth several percentage points of rate, because it removes the damage claims that erode the margin.

When LCL is the right answer

Test orders, mixed sourcing from several factories, and any shipment where the objective is to learn rather than to stock. Paying a premium to learn that a model does not sell is a good trade.

The paperwork is different too

LCL shipments involve a consolidator and often a freight forwarder's arrival notice that arrives later than expected. Build a week of slack into the plan before promising a delivery date to a customer.
