Container utilisation is arithmetic and discipline. The arithmetic is the carton, and the discipline is whether the floor plan of the load matches the plan that was quoted, because a container loaded at the convenience of the loading crew rarely matches.
Start with the equipment
A 40-foot high cube container offers around 76 cubic metres of nominal volume, and practical loading achieves a fraction of that depending on carton shape. Tall, narrow lamp cartons stack well; a carton with an awkward ratio wastes space at the doors and along the walls.
| Equipment | Nominal capacity | Typical net for lamp cartons |
|---|---|---|
| 20 ft standard | ~33 CBM | 70–80 percent usable |
| 40 ft standard | ~67 CBM | 75–85 percent usable |
| 40 ft high cube | ~76 CBM | 75–85 percent usable |
| LCL, consolidated | By cubic metre | Lower, due to handling and re-stuffing |
The loading plan is a drawing
A useful load starts as a scale drawing: palletised or floor loaded, which orientation, how many layers, and where the gaps fall. Most factories will provide photographs of a loaded container on request, and the difference between the drawing and the photograph is where the missing units went.
Pallet or floor loaded
Palletising costs volume and saves labour at both ends. Floor loading gains volume and moves the unloading cost to the destination warehouse, where it may cost more per hour than the origin saved. For a heavy floor lamp, the decision usually turns on whether the receiving site can handle a floor-loaded container.
Damage and loading are the same subject
A load that leans, that lacks strapping, or that puts a heavy carton on top of a shade box will produce claims that no packaging improvement can prevent. Specify strapping, specify that shade cartons are not top-loaded, and ask for photographs before the doors close.
Review it once per programme
Measure achieved utilisation from the loading report on the first three shipments. If it is below the plan, the fix is usually a small carton change rather than a different forwarder, and it is worth several percent of landed cost.
