Preventing Transit Damage Before It Happens

Preventing Transit Damage Before It Happens

Every lighting programme has a damage rate. The useful question is not what the rate is but where the failures concentrate, because the concentration identifies the fix and the fix is usually cheap.

The four failure locations

In floor and table lamps, damage clusters in four predictable places:

  1. The shade, at the rim and at the seam, from compression rather than impact
  2. The stem joint, where a tall column meets a base
  3. The base, at a corner, from a drop onto a hard surface
  4. The bulb, if one is included, from contact with the shade frame

Compression, not impacts

Most shade damage in a full container comes from stacking pressure rather than from being dropped. Increasing the vertical strength of the pack or changing the stack pattern fixes it, and the solution is a board grade and a loading rule rather than more foam.

Design the pack around the failure

Localised protection costs less than global protection. A pulp cradle at both ends of the shade, a foam collar at the stem joint and a corner block on the base will outperform a thicker box with uniform padding.

Verify with a test, not an opinion

Run a drop test at the container level on the first production batch and record the result. If the design changes, run it again. The cost of the test is trivial compared with a few hundred damaged units, and the results can be shared with the carrier if a claim is ever needed.

Track damage per shipment

Record damaged units as a percentage of units shipped, by model and by pack version. A rising trend with an unchanged pack points at the carrier; a step change with a new pack points at the packaging. Without the record, both look like bad luck.
