A bedside lamp with power built into the base is now an expectation rather than a feature. The specification details decide whether it is an asset that reduces guest complaints or a maintenance item that generates them.

What guests actually plug in

A phone, a tablet, a watch and increasingly a laptop. That mix has moved the requirement from a single USB-A port to either a USB-C port delivering meaningful power or an AC outlet plus a USB port. A USB-A port rated at one amp is no longer sufficient for a modern phone to charge at a useful rate, and guests notice.

Where the ports sit matters

A port on the front face of the base is reachable from the bed. A port on top collects dust and spills from a bedside glass. Ports on the rear face exist to satisfy a datasheet and are useless to a guest lying down.

Controls: the knob wins

Guests do not read instructions and cannot find a remote at two in the morning. A single rotary knob or a rocker that turns the lamp on at a predictable level, with a separate dimming action, is the correct interface for a guest room. Touch controls and remotes increase maintenance calls and are frequently reported as faults.

Electrical and listing considerations

Adding USB circuitry to a lamp makes the base an electrical assembly in its own right, with a driver and a socket outlet in some configurations. The additional circuitry has to be evaluated under the relevant standard, and the total load has to be accounted for in the cord and plug rating.

The housekeeping reality

Ports accumulate dust, lint and occasionally liquid. A base with a smooth, wipeable face and ports that do not face upward reduces the number of units pulled from service, and a replaceable port module turns a repair into a five-minute job instead of a discarded lamp.
