Student Lighting: What a Dorm Room Actually Needs

Student accommodation is the most demanding lighting environment most people ever live in: shared, small, poorly lit to begin with, and occupied by someone who needs to read after the other occupant has gone to sleep.

The three lamps that solve the room

A dorm or small student flat is well served by a combination, not a single purchase:

1. A clamp or clip desk lamp for the desk, so nothing is lost from the work surface
2. A low-output floor lamp for ambient light near the bed, ideally with a dimmer
3. A small bedside lamp or an integrated LED puck for reading in bed without lighting the room

Why a clamp beats a weighted base here

A desk in student accommodation is often the only horizontal surface, and it is already full. Clamping the lamp to the edge of the desk or the bed frame frees the whole surface and removes the risk of knocking a weighted base onto the floor.

Control the spill

In a shared room, light that escapes in the wrong direction is an argument. A lamp with a directional head and a low setting covers the requirement: enough light on a page to read by, not enough on the opposite wall to wake anyone.

Integrated LED or replaceable bulb

Students move. A lamp with an integrated LED at 2700K needs no bulb purchase and cannot be fitted with the wrong one, which for this market is worth more than replaceability. A lamp with an E26 socket is the opposite trade and can be kept for years.
