Lighting for Video Calls: A Home Office Problem Worth Solving

Lighting for Video Calls: A Home Office Problem Worth Solving

Remote work made a new specification problem for lighting: not how a room looks in person, but how one person looks through a wide-angle lens at 720p. The requirements are close to the opposite of good task lighting.

The problem with a desk lamp on a call

A task lamp sits beside or in front of the keyboard, which means it lights the face from below. Every shadow the human eye reads as a sign of ill health — under the eyes, under the nose, under the chin — is produced by light coming from below the subject.

What a camera needs

Flat, frontal, slightly above eye level, with a soft source. Distance matters: a small bright source close to the face creates harsh falloff across the nose, while a larger, softer source further away is kinder to a compressed video stream.

Colour temperature shows on screen

Mixing a warm lamp with a cool screen creates split colour on the face that viewers read as bad health rather than as a lighting error. Keep the key light and the room within one step of each other, ideally both near 3000K for a warmer look or both near 4000K for a neutral one.

Where a floor lamp earns its place

A floor lamp behind the monitor, head above the top of the screen and angled slightly down, is the simplest way to produce frontal fill without adding anything to the desk surface. An adjustable head and a diffuser are the useful features here; high output is not.

Make the lamp do both jobs

The compromise that works: a task lamp with a low-glare optic and a dimmer, plus a floor lamp across the room providing background level. On a call, turn the task lamp down and let the floor lamp carry the face; for paperwork, reverse the balance.
