Office desk lamps are bought in batches and used by people who did not choose them. That changes the specification from a personal one to an operational one, and the differences are all in the parts that do not appear in a photograph.
What an office purchase actually requires
Five requirements, most of which a residential buyer would never consider:
- A single model or a small family, so the floor looks deliberate
- A switch that is obvious and behaves identically on every unit
- Cable management that keeps cords off the floor between desks
- Serviceable parts, because one failure out of fifty is a maintenance ticket
- A finish that survives cleaning products and does not show fingerprints
Light quality for a mixed population
Offices contain people who want a bright desk and people who want almost none. A dimmable lamp with a wide range and a stable low end satisfies both, while a fixed-output lamp forces one group to work around it.
| Requirement | Specification | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Colour temperature | 3000–4000K | Compatible with typical office ambient |
| Output | Adjustable, roughly 200–600 lx at the desk | Covers reading and screen work |
| Colour rendering | 90 or above | Documents, colour-coded work, samples |
| Dimming floor | Below 10 percent | Use as a low-level ambient in the evening |
| Flicker | Stable driver, no visible ripple | Eight hours a day, in peripheral vision |
Mounting and desk compatibility
Bench desks, height-adjustable desks and desks with cable trays each present a different mounting problem. Confirm the clamp range and the edge profile against the actual furniture before ordering, and check whether the lamp follows the desk when the desk is raised.
Order the spares with the batch
Two or three spare units and a handful of switches and cord sets in the original order cost very little and remove the need to place a small order later at a multiple of the unit price.
Standardise, then stop
Once an office has settled on a model, keep buying it. Re-specifying a desk lamp every year produces a patchwork of finishes and switches, and the visual cost of that is larger than the price difference between similar lamps.
