Clamp or Weighted Base? Choosing Desk Lamp Hardware

Office desk lamps fail in a predictable order: the joint loosens, the mount slips, and the switch dies. Starting with the mounting method rather than the light output removes a third of those failures before they happen.

What each mount is good for

A weighted base asks nothing of the furniture and can be moved anywhere. A clamp, grommet or rail mount keeps the desktop clear and resists being knocked, at the price of depending on the desk edge having something to grip.

Check the desk before the lamp

Measure desk thickness, edge profile and whether the edge is square or rounded. Clamps are specified to a range, usually up to about two inches, and a bevelled edge reduces the usable grip more than buyers expect.

The joints are the whole lamp

Count the articulation points and judge each one. A tension joint that a customer tightens by hand is repairable; a friction joint that relies on factory torque is not. In an office order, joint construction is the difference between a one-year lamp and a five-year lamp.

Cable management is a specification

In an office, an unmanaged cable becomes someone's trip hazard and then a maintenance request. Integral cable routing or a clip on the arm costs almost nothing and removes the complaint entirely.

What to write on the order

Mount type, desk thickness range, articulation count, switch type and cable length. Also specify the finish, because in an office the lamp is part of the furniture and mismatched metals are noticed by everyone except the person who signed the order.
