Carton Design: The Cheapest Place to Save Money on a Lamp

Packaging is the only part of a lamp that is paid for three times: once as material, once as freight, and once again as damage. It is also the part most likely to be inherited from an earlier product without review.

Measure the carton as a cost object

Record length, width, height, gross weight and master carton quantity for every model. Multiply through into container utilisation and parcel category, and the number that emerges is a cost per unit per thousand miles, which is a number a buyer can compare across designs.

Drop testing is the honest specification

Ask for a drop test from carton height against a standard such as ISTA series, and ask for the result rather than the procedure. A pack that passes a drop test at the corners and the stem joint is worth more than a pack with thicker corrugate and no test.

The customer opens the box twice

First in a warehouse, then at home. Packaging that requires a knife to open harms the product, and packaging with too much material creates a disposal problem the customer resents. A simple inner tray with printed assembly instructions solves both.

Print, and what belongs on the panel

The outside of the carton is a compliance surface: model, rating, country of origin, and any required warnings. Retail packaging adds brand and specification. Keep the two versions aligned, because the retail carton is the one a customer will compare with the website.

Review it once a year

Carrier thresholds change, container equipment changes, and a design that was optimal three years ago may no longer be. A packaging review is one of the few sourcing exercises that produces savings without touching the product.
