Why Lamps Get Returned, and What the Product Design Can Do About It

Return rates in decorative lighting are driven less by failure than by expectation. The product works, the customer sends it back, and the reason is almost always one of five predictable mismatches.

The five reasons, in order

Across lighting programmes we see the same pattern:

  1. Size surprise — the lamp is taller or shorter than the customer pictured
  2. Light character — colour temperature or brightness does not match the room
  3. Damage in transit, mainly at the shade and the stem joint
  4. Missing or wrong hardware, usually a finial, a nut or a socket ring
  5. Colour and finish look different from the photograph

Fix the photograph before the product

Product photography with a warm cast makes every lamp sell better and return worse. Shooting on a neutral background with a stated colour temperature, and including a human-scale reference, removes two of the five causes without changing the product at all.

Publish the dimensions the customer cares about

Overall height, shade diameter and base diameter. Buyers measure against a sofa or a nightstand; a single height figure leaves them guessing, and guessing is what generates returns.

Design for the return you cannot prevent

Assembly should be possible with the tools in a kitchen drawer, and repacking should be possible with the original carton. Lamps that are hard to reassemble and hard to repack cost more in the reverse channel than they earn in the first sale.

Track returns by model

A model with a return rate twice the assortment average is telling you something specific. Separate damage from dissatisfaction, and the answer is usually obvious: a shade that does not survive, a colour temperature that reads cold, or a base that is too light for a big shade.

The one number worth publishing

Return rate by model, reviewed every season. It is the only figure that connects the product, the photograph, the carton and the customer in a single line, and it improves as soon as somebody is accountable for it. Most programmes that start measuring it cut their rate within two seasons, without changing the price.
