Lighting reaches customers through channels with genuinely different requirements. Suppliers who understand which channel a programme is built for stop wasting samples on buyers who were never going to place the order.
The four channels and what each needs
The same lamp will be re-specified for each of these, in different directions:
| Channel | Buys on | Critical requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace | Price and reviews | Small carton, damage-proof, clear specification |
| Specialty retail | Sell-through and margin | Display-friendly, matched finishes, replenishment |
| Design trade | Specification and finish | Colour consistency, lead time, samples on request |
| Hospitality and multifamily | Durability and service | Replaceable parts, high-cycle switch, documented file |
Marketplace economics reward packaging
On a marketplace, the return is the largest controllable cost. A carton that survives parcel handling and a specification that answers the top three questions in the listing images reduce returns more than any price change.
Reviews compound the same way. A model with a hundred ratings behaves differently from an identical model with four, and the difference is not the product but the volume of proof behind it. That argues for a narrower range sold in depth on a marketplace, and a wider range reserved for channels where a buyer can see and handle the product.
Specialty retail rewards consistency
A store displays a family, not a model. Finish consistency across a range, and the ability to replenish a single model rather than a container, are the two things that keep a retail programme alive past the first season.
Design trade rewards documentation
Specifiers need dimensions, finishes, colour temperature, output and certification in a form they can paste into a schedule. Suppliers who supply that as a PDF rather than as photographs get specified more often, because the specifier's job is to document rather than to shop.
Hospitality rewards serviceability
An operator with two hundred rooms cares about the cost of the third year, not the price of the first. Replaceable switches, available cord sets and a spare-part commitment win programmes that price alone does not.
