Minimum Order Quantities in Lighting: What Is Actually Negotiable

Minimum Order Quantities in Lighting: What Is Actually Negotiable

A minimum order quantity is a price, not a policy. It reflects tooling amortisation, packaging runs, raw material purchase lots and the factory's cost of holding a special colour on the shelf. Each of those has a different negotiating range.

What sits behind the number

Four cost drivers, and they respond to different arguments:

DriverWhy it sets an MOQHow to move it
Paint and finish batchMinimum viable batch for a colourAccept a stock finish, or pay a batch fee
Packaging print runMinimum print quantity for retail cartonsUse plain cartons on the first order
Component order lotSupplier lot size for a specific fittingAccept substitution to a stocked component
Setup and toolingAmortised over the orderPay tooling separately to lower the MOQ

Mixed SKUs instead of one model

A factory that needs volume will often accept a per-model minimum far below its stated MOQ if the total order reaches the same value. Ask for the total, then work backwards to the mix.

What you give up when you get a lower MOQ

Usually one of three things: a slightly higher unit price, a stock finish instead of a custom one, or a longer lead time because your order queues behind larger runs. Decide in advance which of the three is acceptable, and you will negotiate faster and with less regret.

The stocking counter-argument

A domestic stockist can break a container into smaller releases because it already carries the inventory risk. That flexibility is the product being sold, and it is worth comparing against the cost of a larger direct order with a supplier whose MOQ you had to fight for.

Write it into the agreement

Record the MOQ, the reorder MOQ and the lead time for a repeat order separately, because reorder minimums are often much lower than first-order minimums and suppliers do not always volunteer that.
