Lighting demand follows housing, weather and holidays rather than any single shopping event. Buyers who map those drivers onto a purchase calendar stop paying seasonal air freight and stop holding the wrong stock in January.
The four peaks
Late spring, when moving season and home improvement collide. Back to school and university intake in late summer. Autumn, when the days shorten and buying a lamp becomes an obvious act. And the pre-holiday weeks, which for lighting are strong on decorative and gift-adjacent models.
| Period | Demand driver | Order placed by |
|---|---|---|
| Late spring | Moving, renovation, tax refunds | January to February |
| Back to school | Student housing, home offices | April |
| Autumn | Shorter days, seasonal transitions | May to June |
| Pre-holiday | Gifting, hosting, decorating | July to August |
Selling in a shoulder month
January and February are the quiet months for decorative lighting, which makes them the right months for sampling, fixture changes and private-label development. Programs that use the shoulder for development arrive at the peak with a finished product instead of a sample.
The domestic advantage is timing
A stockist can respond inside a six-week window, which is precisely the length of a seasonal peak. Import programmes that miss their order date either pay for air freight or miss the season entirely, and both outcomes cost more than the unit-price difference.
Clear at the right moment
Decorative models date faster than functional ones. Markdown timing matters more than markdown depth: a lamp discounted in the last week of a season sells at a better price than the same lamp discounted in the first week of the next one.
Review the pattern annually
Compare sell-through by model against the season it was bought for, and adjust the order calendar rather than the assortment. Most programmes discover that one of their four peaks is consistently mistimed by a month.
