Warranty claims and support emails both get cheaper when the first conversation follows a sequence rather than a guess. This is the sequence we use before agreeing that a unit has failed.
Work in this order
Each step eliminates a cause that would otherwise be tested later at greater cost:
- Try the lamp in a different socket, on a different circuit, with another appliance on that circuit
- Check the bulb, if the lamp takes one, against a known good bulb of the same base
- Check the switch at every position and listen for a scraping or crackling sound
- Inspect the cord and plug for strain, heat marks or a bent blade
- Check the dimmer, if fitted, with the load reduced or increased
The five causes, ranked
In practice, reported LED lamp faults distribute roughly as follows, and the distribution is stable enough to be useful to a support team:
| Cause | Typical share | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Bulb, not the lamp | About a third | Replace the bulb; no claim |
| Dimmer incompatibility | About a quarter | Explain and supply a compatible control |
| Switch failure | About a fifth | Replace the switch, a serviceable part |
| Cord or plug damage | Small but visible | Replace the cord set |
| Driver or LED failure | The remainder | Warranty replacement |
Flicker has its own logic
A lamp that flickers only when dimmed is a compatibility problem. A lamp that flickers at full output is a driver problem. A lamp that flickers when another appliance switches on is a wiring or circuit problem, and telling the customer that is a service rather than an excuse.
What to ask for in the first email
A photograph, the order number, whether the fault is constant or intermittent, and whether the lamp is dimmed. Those four items resolve a large share of tickets without a second exchange, and they make the remaining claims straightforward to process.
Fix the cause upstream
If a third of the volume of reported faults is a bulb the customer fitted themselves, the cheapest fix is packaging that states the requirement clearly and a bulb supplied in the carton. Neither change is a product improvement, and both reduce support cost.
