Cleaning and Caring for Lamps and Shades

Lamps accumulate dust in places nobody looks and get cleaned with whatever is already in the hand. That is why the most common finish complaints are abrasion and chemical damage rather than manufacturing defects.

The right routine by material

Different surfaces need different treatment, and the differences are not optional:

SurfaceSafe routineAvoid
Powder coated metalDry microfibre, then a damp clothAbrasive pads, solvent cleaners
Plated brass or nickelDry soft cloth; occasional non-abrasive polishAmmonia cleaners, acidic sprays
Solid wood baseDry cloth; furniture wax occasionallySoaking, alcohol
Linen shadeSoft brush or a vacuum on low with a brush headWater, washing machines
Glass or acrylic shadeDamp cloth with mild soapSolvents on acrylic
Cord and plugDry cloth onlyAny liquid near the plug or switch

Shades are the fragile part

A fabric shade that gets wet can stain or distort permanently, and the seam is the first place it shows. Dust removes well with a soft brush in a downward direction; anything wet should be treated as a professional job or not at all.

Switches and sockets

No liquid should reach a switch or a socket, and a lamp should be unplugged before any cleaning that involves dampness. A rotary switch that feels gritty is usually dust inside the mechanism, and a switch that makes a scraping sound when turned should be replaced rather than cleaned.

Bulbs and heat

Turning a lamp off before replacing a bulb and handling the new bulb with a cloth avoids two common failures: burns, and uneven heating that shortens the life of a bulb in a confined shade.

What to print in the carton

Six lines of care instructions, one panel, no jargon. They reduce damage claims, they reduce support emails, and they extend the life of the product, which is the cheapest warranty improvement available to a supplier.
