Repairability rules in Europe have moved from principle to testable requirement, and portable luminaires sit in an awkward position. Most floor and table lamps sold today use integrated LEDs, which many buyers assume disqualifies them. In practice the rules turn on separability and spare-part availability, not on whether the lamp takes a screw-in bulb.
What replaceable actually means here
The requirement is usually expressed in two tiers. A light source may need to be removable by an end user without tools, or removable by a professional using common tools. Separately, control gear such as the driver is expected to be replaceable independently of the light source.
A lamp with a screwed-down LED board and a plug-in connector passes the spirit of the rule. The same lamp with the board potted into the housing does not, even though both look identical from the outside.
Why a non-replaceable driver is the expensive failure
Field data across portable lighting points at the driver far more often than at the LED itself. Electrolytic capacitors age, thermal cycling stresses solder joints, and a driver that fails takes the whole fixture with it when it cannot be swapped.
- A part number for the LED module, quoted on the spec sheet
- Confirmation that the driver is a separate, replaceable unit
- A stated support window for spares, in years not intentions
- A disassembly sequence included in the manual or the technical file
When the only failure mode costs a fifth of the lamp to fix, a sealed design converts a small repair into a full return and a warranty write-off.
How to raise it with a supplier
Ask for the spare-part list at quotation stage rather than after the first warranty claim. A supplier who can produce it in a day has already thought about it; one who needs a month probably has not.

Does an integrated-LED lamp fail the repairability rules?
Not by itself. What matters is whether the light source and the control gear can be separated and replaced, and whether the parts are actually available. Many integrated designs satisfy both.
Is this only an EU issue?
The detailed rules are European, but several US states have been moving on repairability as well, and the commercial argument holds everywhere: a replaceable driver lowers your warranty cost per unit sold.
