Building a Lamp Aisle That Sells: Planogram Basics

Building a Lamp Aisle That Sells: Planogram Basics

Most lamp aisles are organised by supplier or by price. Neither matches the way a shopper actually decides, which is by walking up to the product, looking at the shade and then trying to imagine it in their own living room.

Live samples before flat stock

A lamp on a shelf is a photograph. A lamp plugged in is a decision. Retailers who can run power to the display get materially higher conversion on the same assortment, because colour temperature and brightness are the two things a customer cannot evaluate from packaging.

A layout that mirrors the room

Group by use rather than by brand: reading, uplighting, bedside, and task. Within each group, order by height, because height is the dimension the customer is comparing in their head against a piece of furniture at home.

Signage does the specification

Put height, colour temperature and bulb requirement on the shelf edge. The three questions that generate the most floor staff time are all answered by those numbers, and they are printed on the carton already.

Stock the spare

Lamps generate bulb and shade questions. A small display of compatible bulbs beside the aisle raises attachment rate, reduces returns and costs almost nothing in space.

Measure the turn, not the sell-in

A lamp aisle is judged on units per square foot per week. Review the planogram against sell-through after the first full season, and move the slowest depth positions rather than deleting the model, because a lamp that fails at eye level often works at floor level.
