What Online Marketplaces Ask For When You Sell Lighting

Selling lighting on a large online marketplace means accepting a documentation regime. The requirements are procedural, they are enforced by automated checks and account actions, and they are far easier to satisfy before a listing is created than after it is suspended.

The document set, in practice

Requests tend to come as a bundle, and the same four or five items recur:

DocumentIssued byWhat it proves
Safety listing certificateAn NRTLThe product was tested to a US standard
Test report or summaryThe testing laboratoryThe construction tested and the standard applied
Declaration of conformityThe manufacturerWho made it and to what standard
Product images and labelsThe sellerThe mark on the product matches the claim
Children's product certificateManufacturerOnly if the product is classed for children

The mismatch that triggers a suspension

The most common cause of an enforcement action is not a missing certificate but a mismatch: a listing image showing a mark on a product that the certificate does not cover, or a certificate naming a legal entity different from the one on the account. Reviewers compare documents against the listing, and differences that seem administrative to a seller read as evidence to a reviewer.

Name the models, not the range

A certificate covering four model numbers does not cover a fifth added later. Extending a listing to a new variant without extending the certificate is the fastest way to lose a listing, and it is entirely avoidable by asking the factory for the additional model entry when the variant is created.

Photograph the label

Marketplaces increasingly ask for images of the rating label on the product and the carton. A clean, legible photograph of the label, with the model number and rating visible, prevents a round of documentation requests that can take a week.

Keep a compliance folder per model

One folder per SKU containing the certificate, the report summary, the declaration, the label artwork and the specification sheet. When a request arrives, the answer takes ten minutes instead of two days, and the version that gets sent is the current one.

Marketplace requirements change frequently. Check the current seller policy for the category before listing.
