Lighting a Music Stand Without Lighting the Audience

A music stand is a task lighting problem with an unusually specific geometry: a small surface, tilted, close to the performer's eyes, and frequently in a room where the audience must not see the light source.

Why the numbers are higher than a desk

Music notation is smaller than a book page and is read at a glance, in rhythm, by someone whose hands are occupied. Practical illuminance on the page runs from about 400 to 600 lux, and it needs to be even across the full width of the stand rather than concentrated in one pool.

The clip-on is the correct form factor

A clip-on lamp attaches to the stand itself, so the distance from head to page is short and constant. That short distance allows a small output to produce the required illuminance, which in turn keeps the spill into the room low.

Warm light reads better on music paper

Cream or aged sheet music under a very cool source looks washed out and oddly bright. A 2700K to 3000K source with high colour rendering is comfortable for long rehearsals and does not produce the glare that a cool source does on white paper.

Batteries and the rehearsal schedule

A portable clip-on is only useful if it lasts a full rehearsal on one charge and can be topped up between sessions. Run time at the level the musician will actually use, not at the lowest setting, is the number to ask for.

Alternatives for fixed installations

In a teaching room or a church, a floor lamp with an adjustable head placed behind the performer can light the stand from over the shoulder, keeping the source out of the audience's view. It takes more space and it works very well, which is why both solutions exist in the same catalogue.
