Three Layers of Light, and Why One Fixture Cannot Do All Three

Three Layers of Light, and Why One Fixture Cannot Do All Three

Lighting design reduces to a small set of jobs, and almost every disappointing room fails because one fixture was asked to perform all of them at once. Separating the jobs is the cheapest improvement available in any space.

The three jobs

Ambient light raises the overall level and lets people move safely. Task light puts useful illuminance on a specific surface. Accent light creates emphasis and depth, usually on a vertical surface or an object.

One bright fixture produces glare and shadow

Push a single source hard enough to raise the ambient level and the source itself becomes uncomfortable, because brightness at the source rises faster than average illuminance in the room. The room ends up simultaneously too bright near the lamp and too dark away from it.

Layering is cheaper than upgrading

Two moderate lamps placed apart usually cost less than one large statement fixture, and they produce a better result. They also give the room a control system for free: turn one off and the character of the space changes completely.

Vertical surfaces are the missing layer

Most residential lighting puts almost everything on the floor and the ceiling, which flattens a room. Light on a wall, a curtain or a bookcase adds depth without adding anything to the horizontal illuminance, and it is the layer people notice without being able to name.

How to plan a room in five minutes

Name the tasks that happen in the room, place a source for each, then add one uplight for ambient and one directional source for the most important vertical surface. Count the sockets and the switches, and if the count surprises you, the plan is not finished.
