Oversize, LTL and White Glove: Delivering Tall Lamps to a Home

Oversize, LTL and White Glove: Delivering Tall Lamps to a Home

Floor lamps fail the parcel network's size tests, which means they travel on freight. Freight to a residential address is a different product from freight to a warehouse, and the difference is where most online lamp complaints originate.

The three delivery modes

Each has a distinct cost, appointment requirement and failure mode:

ModeTypical useFailure mode
ParcelCartons within size limitsDimensional weight surprises
LTL freightOne or two oversize cartonsResidential surcharge, no call-ahead, curb delivery
White gloveFurniture, assembled deliveryCost; scheduling windows
Freight plus inside deliveryMulti-unit home ordersAppointment missed, goods returned

The residential surcharge nobody quotes

Carriers apply residential delivery fees, liftgate charges and sometimes a call-ahead fee for residential freight. A delivery quoted as curb only can leave a customer carrying a 78-inch carton up two flights of stairs, which becomes a review rather than a delivery.

Call-ahead prevents the worst outcome

A freight delivery that arrives with no notice is often refused, and a refused shipment is expensive in both directions. A scheduled window, even a wide one, converts most of those refusals into completed deliveries.

When white glove pays for itself

For a high-value floor lamp sold into a home, the cost of white glove is frequently less than the cost of one return, because damage and refusal rates fall sharply when a trained pair of hands moves the product. It is also a differentiating promise in a category where the competition ships a box.

Package for the last hundred feet

The carton has to survive a liftgate, a curb, a hallway and a staircase. Anything that can be carried by two people in one trip will be handled more carefully than something that requires improvisation, which is an argument for a carton count of one rather than two.
