Mixing Materials and Finishes in a Lighting Collection

Mixing Materials and Finishes in a Lighting Collection

A lighting collection is judged across the whole assortment rather than one product at a time. Finish and material consistency is what makes a range feel designed rather than sourced, and it is a specification decision, not a styling one.

Anchor the metals

Pick two metal tones and hold them. A collection with brass, black and nickel across the range looks like three purchases, while a brass-and-black range reads as a family. Within the two tones, decide which is the primary and which is the accent.

Warm metals age visibly

Unlacquered brass patinates, lacquered brass yellows if the coating fails, and plated finishes can corrode at a scratch. Buyers should know which they are specifying, because the after-sales conversation for each is different and only one of them is a defect.

Consistency across a range

The same finish name supplied by two factories is rarely the same finish. Ask for a physical sample panel from each production site and compare them under a single light source before committing a range. Photographs taken in two different rooms will hide the difference.

Materials age at different rates

Wood moves with humidity, metal does not, and the joint between them is where a product shows its age. Design the connection with room to move, and a wood-and-metal lamp will outlast one built with a rigid fit.

Give the retailer a reason

A collection with a stated rule, such as two metals and one wood, is easier for a retail buyer to merchandise and easier for a customer to combine. The rule is a selling tool even when the customer never notices it was followed.
