Two lamps with identical lumen output can make the same room feel like a hotel lobby or a dental surgery. The difference is colour temperature, and it is the specification most often left to whoever picks the bulb.
The residential band
North American homes are lit warm. The comfortable band runs from about 2400K to 3000K, with 2700K the safest single choice for living rooms and bedrooms and 3000K useful in kitchens, bathrooms and utility areas where task visibility matters more than atmosphere.
| Colour temperature | Reads as | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| 2200–2400K | Very warm, amber | Hospitality, accent, evening zones |
| 2700K | Warm white | Living rooms, bedrooms, most residential |
| 3000K | Soft white | Kitchens, baths, retail, offices at home |
| 3500–4000K | Neutral | Workshops, garages, some commercial |
| 5000K+ | Daylight, cool | Industrial; rarely appropriate in a home |
Consistency beats precision
A room with three lamps at 2700K looks better than a room with one at 2700K and two at 4000K, even though the average is closer to ideal. Buyers notice mismatch long before they notice the absolute number, which is why a programme sold as a collection should use a single colour temperature across the range.
Why the same Kelvin looks different in two rooms
Wall colour, wood tone and the light already in the room all shift perception. The same 3000K lamp reads cool against terracotta and warm against grey. This is why sample evaluation should happen in the customer's own space, or at least against their finish sample.
The dimming trap
Many LED lamps shift warmer as they dim, some shift cooler, and some hold their colour. All three behaviours are sold as features, and none of them are stated on the carton. If a customer is dimming to a low level every evening, the colour at ten percent output matters more than the colour at full output.
What to write on the order
Specify the nominal colour temperature, the tolerance, and whether the figure refers to the lamp or the complete fixture. A 3000K fixture with a 2700K bulb is a 2700K lamp, regardless of what the spec sheet says.
