Classroom and Training Room Lighting

Classroom and Training Room Lighting

Teaching spaces are lit for the average lesson, which no longer exists. A modern classroom combines reading, writing, projection and screen work in a single hour, and requires the lighting to change with the activity rather than sit at one level.

The requirements move with the lesson

Handwriting and reading want 300 to 500 lux on the desk with a light-coloured surround. Viewing a projected image wants the front of the room dim and the seating area low. Screen work wants moderate ambient with no reflection in the glass.

Zoning beats one switch

The single most useful change in an existing room is separating the front-of-room lights from the seating lights, and adding a dimmable level for the front zone. It costs one circuit and it makes the room usable for projection without turning everything off.

Flicker and glare matter more here

Long exposure, young eyes and a room full of white paper make flicker and glare more noticeable than in a home. A stable driver and a shielded or diffused source are baseline requirements rather than upgrades.

Where a portable lamp helps

Reading corners, resource areas and individual workstations in a training room are frequently underlit even when the room average is acceptable. A floor lamp with a shielded head beside a reading chair solves it without touching the ceiling.

Daylight is a control problem

Rooms with windows have a wide range of conditions across a day, and blinds used to control glare reduce the light that made the room pleasant. A daylight-responsive dimming zone at the window wall is the standard solution; failing that, a manual zone is better than nothing.
