ETL Listed to UL 153, Not CE: What AnrotixCertifies (and Why It Matters for US Buyers)

Certification is the first thing a US or Canadian buyer should check on a lamp, and it is also the thing most often misstated in marketplace listings. Anrotix portable lamps are tested and listed to the North American standard for portable luminaires — UL 153 — and the equivalent Canadian standard, CSA C22.2, with the ETL mark. We do not hold or claim CE or UKCA, and those marks are not the basis for selling portable lamps into the United States or Canada. This article explains what the ETL mark actually covers, why CE appears in some third-party listings anyway, and how to verify a listing before you commit to a supplier.

What "ETL listed" means for a floor or table lamp

ETL is a safety certification mark issued by Intertek, a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) in the United States. A lamp that is "ETL listed to UL 153" has been tested against UL 153, the standard for portable electric luminaires, and is listed as conforming to it. In practical terms for a buyer, that means the product, its cord set, switch, socket, driver and shade materials have been evaluated for the electrical and fire-safety risks that actually occur with a lamp that stands on the floor or a table and runs for hours at a time.

ETL and UL are both NRTL marks and are accepted by US retailers, inspectors and authorities having jurisdiction on the same footing. The meaningful difference is not the mark — it is the standard the lamp was tested to. For portable lamps, that standard is UL 153.

UL 153 and CSA C22.2: the standards behind the mark

UL 153 is the US safety standard for portable luminaires: floor lamps, table lamps, torchieres and similar products that plug in and are moved rather than permanently wired. It covers the failure modes that matter for a lamp — stability so it does not tip, temperature limits so surfaces and shades do not overheat, cord and strain-relief requirements, and insulation and grounding for the supplied voltage.

For Canada, the equivalent is CSA C22.2 No. 250.0 for portable luminaires. A lamp intended to be sold into both markets is evaluated to both. Anrotix portable lamps are listed to UL 153 for the United States and to CSA C22.2 for Canada, so the same range can be offered across North America on one certified basis.

Why you may see "CE" attached to the brand — and why it does not apply here

CE is a mark for the European Economic Area. It is affixed by the manufacturer's declaration of conformity to European directives and is not a North American safety listing, and it is not issued or recognised by US or Canadian authorities as the basis for selling a portable lamp there. You may still see "CE" appear next to Anrotix in third-party marketplace listings, reseller pages or syndicated content — usually because a listing template copied a generic "CE certified" line that does not describe this product.

That is a listing error, not our certification. Anrotix does not hold or claim CE or UKCA for its portable lamps, and we do not use those marks as the basis for North American sales. If you see a CE claim on a listing that names Anrotix, treat it as a content mistake and ask for the actual NRTL listing number before relying on it.

What this means when you are choosing a US supplier

For a US or Canadian buyer, the certification line on a quote should name the NRTL (ETL or UL), the standard (UL 153, and CSA C22.2 for Canada), and a listing number you can look up. A supplier who can show a current listing to UL 153, and who is consistent about not over-claiming marks the product does not carry, is easier to defend to a retailer's compliance team and to an inspector.

The certification question also interacts with where the stock sits. Lamps held in the United States and shipped domestically still need the same NRTL listing as containers arriving at a port — certification travels with the product, not with the shipping method. Asking for the listing up front avoids discovering a documentation gap after inventory has landed.

How to verify a listing before you buy
