Smart Lighting in 2023: What Matter Actually Changed for Lamp Manufacturers

The smart lighting market spent a decade producing devices that worked with exactly one ecosystem and one app. The arrival of cross-vendor standards changes what a buyer should ask for, and it does not automatically make a product future-proof.

The old model and its cost

Each lamp shipped with its own radio, its own bridge and its own application. When the vendor stopped updating the app, the lamp became a manual lamp. Buyers absorbed that risk without recognising it as a product decision.

What cross-vendor standards change

A lamp built to a shared application-layer standard can be commissioned by a controller from another vendor, which means the lamp outlives the app. It also means the radio and the platform can be specified separately, which is the change that matters to a volume buyer.

ApproachInteroperabilityRisk to the buyer
Proprietary app and hubNoneHigh: tied to one vendor's roadmap
Shared standard, Wi-FiGoodDepends on the network and on firmware updates
Shared standard, low-power meshGood, needs a border routerFirmware support still required
Non-networked, remote onlyNot applicableLowest risk; no updates needed

Firmware support is the real specification

Ask how long the manufacturer commits to security and compatibility updates, and what happens to the device if the cloud service is retired. A local control path, such as a physical switch or a remote that does not need the internet, is the cheapest insurance against a service ending.

Where smart features pay for themselves

Scheduling, dimming, and integration with a room scene. Where they do not: in hospitality, where a guest should not have to download anything, and in care settings, where an obvious physical control is more accessible than any application.

What a buyer should request in writing

Radio and protocol, the standards supported, the update commitment, whether a local fallback exists, and whether the lamp still functions as a standard lamp when the network is down. Four of those five answers matter more than the feature list.
