Every lighting buyer has opened a box where the 'works with Alexa' badge meant a different, weaker thing than the listing implied. Matter 1.4 is the spec version that starts closing those gaps for lamps, and it changes what a buyer should ask for on a quotation.
The change buyers actually feel
Matter 1.4 improves how a device reports its real state back to a controller — dim level, colour temperature, on or off — so that a hub, app or voice assistant shows the truth instead of the last command it sent. For a floor or table lamp that is dimmable, that removes the classic 'the app says 60 percent but the lamp is at 100' mismatch.
It also formalises scene and group behaviour, so a lamp added to a room actually stays in that room across a power cycle. That sounds trivial and is the single most common complaint in smart-lamp reviews.
What to put on the purchase order
Ask for the Matter version the firmware targets, not just the word Matter. A lamp certified to 1.4 behaves differently from one certified to 1.2, and the difference shows up in multi-vendor homes where your customer mixes brands.
- Matter version stated in the spec sheet (1.4 or later preferred)
- Thread border router requirement spelled out, or confirmation the lamp bridges Wi-Fi
- A written commitment that future OTA updates keep the same certification
Why it matters for stock you already hold
Older connected lamps do not become unsafe, but they age out of 'works with everything' expectations quickly. If your assortment leans on remote-controlled models, confirm which have a path to a current Matter version before you reorder.
A private-app lamp with no Matter path is a future return risk the moment the app stops being maintained.

No. It sets a newer interoperability baseline. Older certified lamps keep working; they simply miss the improved state-reporting and grouping that 1.4 adds.
